What is the meaning of FMM
The work undertaken during pioneering of the method has shown conclusively that pain sufferers can be helped greatly by restoring normal mobility, almost regardless of the condition with which the sufferer labelled himself, or was labelled by others.
All mechanical conditions such as sciatica, lumbago, fibrositis, frozen shoulder, neck stiffness, hip joint problems - and many others - can all be aided substantially by the accurate application of FM methods using hands-on work and self- help. The real difficulty for patients is understanding that all the labels they apply are simply a way of pigeon -holing the symptom pattern. The label tells you nothing of the REASON nor the real origin of the problem nor what it really means. For example, many patients present with what is termed tennis elbow--hardly ever do they play tennis!! But few have asked the question --what does this label mean? Of course it only tells the person who applies the label , the location of pain-- at the elbow of course. But the VAST MAJORITY of so called tennis elbow sufferers have a neck problem and nothing wrong with the elbow!. It is hard case to convince the average doctor or physio of the error of their diagnosis, even when the patient has retrieved the pain free state!!--- never mind the difficulty the patient has with believing this. But we prove this consistently every week in our practices!
The aim of the practitioner at all times is to restore full movement to all soft tissue and joints affected whether they are at the site of pain or remote from it. The closer the patient can be brought towards the child-like state, the less is the level of disability and pain. Thus--fmm means exactly that. We set out to produce the full movement wherever it is lost and it is this fact of which there is universal ignorance in the therapy world, astounding though this may be.
This principle was, it is believed, firmly understood by the cleverest people--the yogis of thousands of years ago. Fmm has evolved from a deep understanding of yoga. It has been CONDENSED from yoga-- that is the word that best describes it--maybe even extracted--so it should not be seen in any way as comparable to anything which currently exists BUT if it has to be then if you read the works of the pioneers of Rolfing and osteopathy then you will see strong similarities with the WAY OF THINKING as well as some of the actual physical aspects. But consider fmm as UNIQUE ..
